BioMy name is Talitha and I am currently working as a volunteer with the Uganda Children's Charity Foundation.
We are taking 22 kids, age 6-18, on a tour of the USA from January to June 2006. They perform traditional dances with drums and songs, sharing African culture with American audiences. The tour provides a platform to raise awareness of AIDS and orphans in Uganda.
In Uganda there are 2.4 million orphans who have lost one or more of their parents, mainly due to the AIDS epidemic and to violence in Northern Uganda. This is out of a total population of 27 million. Our organization, http://www.childrenofuganda.org , supports over 750 children in Uganda with education, food, shelter, and medical care. The performers are orphans and/or vulnerable children from this program.
The Tour of Light presents a first-rate, award winning performance in 31 cities this year.
This is nothing official, nor the opinions of the organization -- but the inside view of a volunteer.
